Halleland Habicht Attorney Natalie Wyatt-Brown Wins Defamation and Sex Discrimination Case, Representing the Defendant in the Action

On March 15, 2013, Natalie Wyatt-Brown won summary judgment for a client in a state court case involving claims of compelled self-publication defamation and sex discrimination. Ruling in favor of Halleland Habicht’s client, the Court held that the plaintiff had failed to show that she was compelled to publish any false, defamatory statements to potential employers. The Court also held that the plaintiff failed to demonstrate that she was terminated because she was female, where she was replaced by a woman, all of the decisionmakers were women and none of the male comparators engaged in similar misconduct. The Court particularly relied on the fact that the firm’s client has a history of hiring and promoting women, including in the C-suite.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Ryan Wahlund as an attorney with our firm. After graduating law school, Ryan clerked for a year for the Honorable Kevin G. Ross at the Minnesota Court of Appeals and worked as a litigator with another Minneapolis law firm before joining us. Ryan has an interest in all types of business and commercial litigation and also provides employment advice and litigation support. Ryan received his J.D. from the William Mitchell College of Law and his B.A. from Bethel University.

The Institute is hosted by the Minnesota State Bar Association Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Law Section, in conjunction with Minnesota CLE. States are expected to regulate Construction Projects aggressively in 2013

Many states during the upcoming year will be working on new stormwater permitting requirements for construction projects. The Clean Water Act requires states or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop new standards for management of run-off and storm water at both residential and commercial construction sites.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has started holding what they call stakeholder meetings to help in the development of these standards. MPCA will be using a general permitting approach to try to cover all projects, but certain individual projects will require individual site permits. Halleland Habicht’s client, Courage Center, annouces proposed merger with Allina Health’s Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute

On December 14, 2012, Courage Center announced its intent to merge its operations with those of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. The merger is expected to be completed during the first half of 2013. Halleland Habicht attorneys, Keith Halleland, Ron Peterson, and Katie Gettman, are assisting Courage Center with the merger. Paul has more than 30 years of experience in advising businesses on a variety of tax, contract and business matters. He also represents individual in their estate planning and probate matters. Channon has 20 years of paralegal experience focusing in business entity formation and administration, probate and estate planning. Paul received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and has a B.A. in Accounting, also from the University. Channon earned her bachelors degree from Southern Methodist University and a paralegal certificate also from Southern Methodist University.
